Nicola Smith is a Director at global law firm, Squire Patton Boggs. Nicola specialises in the food and drink, hospitality, leisure and retail sectors and her regulatory expertise includes food law and general product liability, as well as alcohol and entertainment licensing. Nicola acts for a wide range of businesses and advises on legal obligations in relation to all aspects of food safety, food hygiene and food information/ labelling, including requirements for the provision of allergen information to customers, both within food manufacture and food service environments.
Nicola prides herself on providing commercially-minded advice. She has provided training and advice to clients and externally on food law requirements, including twice to representatives of the Chinese Food and Drug Enforcement Agency visiting the UK to understand the application of food and drink (and medicines) laws.
Nicola has also written for the food edition of the American Bar Association (ABA) publication, on the trend of recent recalls due to labelling errors, including errors in relation to allergens.
Nicola represents clients in relation to enforcement proceedings, including interviews under caution and contested hearings. Nicola has advised on a number of potential recalls and notifications, as well as legal requirements for product compliance.
